How would you answer this question?
I got a call from my District Manager on Friday. It went something like this:
DM: I want to run something by you.
Me: O.K
DM: We need to cut a management position in your store. So we either cut your position or a sales manager’s position. I wanted to know your opinion.
Now how am I suppose to have answered this question?

One of the sales managers was being transferred to another store that was closer to where she lived. So if a sales manager position would be cut, her position simply wouldn’t be replaced. So either cut my position or not replace hers.
It was a simple question for me to answer.
The catch?
I get to keep my duties as assistant store manager, but take over her responsibility of running her department too. She was running the largest department in the store.
A Two for One Special.
I don’t think I would have lost my job. I’ve been told I’m part of the succession plan. At least I think I believe them. Now, I get to figure out how to do the job of two people.

I hope it comes with a raise??????

As an assistant store manager I was wondering if you could delegate some of her responsibilities down the line. I mean not hand them all over to just one person, but divide her responsibilities up amongst many further down the chain of command. Then you could just oversee their follow through.
Hopefully something like that can be done so you don’t burn out trying to do it all yourself.
Sending a prayer your way.
These companies are zapping a lot of people. About the only that can be done is to delegate. Get someone else to help. With the economy the way it is they know they have people trapped.

what an awkward position to be in. How are you dealing with all this extra stress? There have been so many changes with your job in such a short amount of time.

That happened to my hubby, he wasn’t asked, it just kinda happened when his display officer suddenly went MIA and now, instead of hiring a new one, they don’t bother because my husband can do his job and that of the display officer’s, but then he doesn’t get a raise.. Companies take advantage of people’s fear of being unemployed which is why they do these things… Sucks big time!

That would have made me feel very ackward. Good luck with running two positions!
The person that asked you this is gutless. They just wanted to have your buy in on the decision so that no matter what happened they could pretend that they are sharing the ownership of the choice with you. That’s not the way a leader behaves, and I think that it stinks that they would even ask you that.
As far as taking on two positions, that seems to be the trend these days. Every employer is cutting back and people are agreeing to things that they wouldn’t normally want to do because they’re happy to have a job. Delegating can only help so much when the pool of people to delegate to is shrinking. Good luck.
