Celebrating Old Friendships
“It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
I got the idea for this post from Jessica over at Growingupartists. She wrote about her new Best Friend Angie and in the end of the post, she encouraged others to write about their Best Friend.
My husband without a doubt is my Best Friend but I’ll save that for Valentine’s Day.
My Best Girl Friend that pops immediately to my mind is Vanessa. We have been friends since Secondary IV, 19 years ago.
Oh boy, I suddenly feel old.
She stuck with me when I went through my weird teenage anger stage. In college when I was the only one in my group of friends that still had to be home by midnight, she never complained. I remember going to a pub, club or whatever. We use to get there at 10:00 when it was just us and the DJ and leave at 11:30 just when people would start showing up, because I had to come home. She would leave with me and NEVER complain, even though she did not have a curfew and could have stayed with our other friends.
She never judged me or made me feel silly for my mistakes.
What I love best about knowing her…….
We always laugh together even when there is nothing to laugh about. We can even giggle for no reason like little school girls. I couldn’t even begin to count the number of times we’d start giggling and have people stare at us like they didn’t get us, but it didn’t matter. We got each other.
I love that I can be myself completely and that I feel comfortable around her.
She is also the Best Listener that I’ve ever met. She listens to my rants, my stories, no matter how long or boring it may be, or how many times I have told it. And in the end, we can always find something to laugh about.
There are No Rules in our Friendship. We don’t have to call a certain number of times, we don’t have to do anything. We just want to.
She moved to Winnipeg which is a 3 provinces away, to be with her now husband. I knew that I would miss her terribly when she left about 8 years ago. But you know what, even though we may see each other only once or twice a year, whenever we do, it’s still the same comfortable feeling. It always feels like it always does. The distance never impacted our friendship. It’s like she has always been there.
And I know that she will always be there.

You’re lucky! Those kind of friends are hard to find!
I miss my friends..very good friends. I have been counting years already for not seeing them at all. Thanks for this entry. I am reminded of the people who love me without expecting what I can give in return.:)

That’s a wonderful story of friendship! What an honorable person to respect your curfew despite all the potential fun waiting, that’s not always easy when you’re young. I also liked hearing how you’ve managed to maintain a closeness after so many years apart. You guys are lucky!
