Here is the next series of our countdown to 2009 special postings.  If you’re like me and always looking for safe sites to educate or entertain your kids, here are some ideas to help.  They are not rated by top 10 but by type of site.

Search for Information

Yahooligans! (yahooligans.com)
The ultimate kid-friendly search engine. Similar to the adlut Yahoo! site but targeted towards children.  It’s a safe place for children to search the web and get a great list of age-appropriate reference links.

Ask Jeeves Kids (ajkids.com)
Does your kid have a question?  If your child is like mine then they have a ton of questions.  Go to this site and get your answer.  It will help your child learn to search for answers at an early age.

Kids Click! (kidsclick.org)
This site was created by a group of US librarians.  So can find all sorts of age-appropriate Web content. All links are non-commercial and non-violent.

How Stuff Works (howstuffworks.com)
This award-winning site clearly and concisely tells kids (and adults!) how different things work – from the everyday (how automobile engines run) to the unusual (how Jell-O sets). Great for their curiousity and knowledge.

Fact Monster (factmonster.com)
This is a one-stop reference source of kid-friendly facts and articles. The award-winning site also has loads of interactive tools that encourage kids to improve their math, spelling and vocabulary.

Amuse and Entertain

CBC Kids (cbc.ca/kids)
A Canadian site.  It’s an extension of CBC’s educational and entertaining programming for kids.  They target specific ages like preschool, afterschool and teens. 

PBS Kids (pbskids.org)
PBS always gets it right.  Another award-winning site which features many of the characters from kids’ favourite TV shows, including Caillou, Clifford, Barney and Oscar the Grouch. There’s also an extensive resource section for parents and teachers.

Kids Reads (kidsreads.com)
How important is it to promote reading at an early age?  This site can help your kids find information about their favourite books and authors, including excerpts from the hottest new releases.

Funology.com (funology.com)
Is your kid looking for something to do?  Are you looking for ideas on what to do with your kids?  This site is a great place for kids to find things to do – not just at the computer, but anywhere. They have a variety of games including magic tricks, recipes, experiments and craft projects.  They can never say they are bored again.

Educate and Learn

Discovery Channel School (school.discovery.com)
Originally designed with parents and teachers in mind.  But now the fun activities have major kid-appeal too. A favourite feature is the learning adventures that let kids explore everything from Cleopatra’s palace to the space station.

CoolMath4Kids (coolmath4kids.com)
Games, brain twisters and colouring-book activities for a variety of age groups help make math fun. A great site for kids who are struggling with multiplication and need to practise their skills.

Science Made Simple (sciencemadesimple.com)
Do you want your kids to learn science the fun way?  This no-frills site helps kids learn science the easy, hands-on way with clear, detailed answers to their questions and lots of fun projects and experiments.

Funbrain.com (funbrain.com)
Interactive tools and games like Grammar Gorillas and MathCar Racing entice kids to learn.
